Transportation Modes and Trade-offs

Choosing the right mode involves balancing cost, transit time, reliability, capacity, and carbon footprint:

Road (Truck):

  • Most flexible — door-to-door delivery to any address
  • FTL: ~$2–4/mile (US), best for high-volume, regular lanes
  • LTL: shared capacity, longer transit, but cost-effective for <10,000 lb shipments
  • Short-haul (<500 miles): typically faster than rail or intermodal

Rail:

  • 3–4× more fuel-efficient than truck per tonne-km
  • Ideal for bulk commodities (grain, coal, chemicals) and intermodal containers over 1,000 miles
  • Limited flexibility — must route to/from terminals; add drayage cost

Ocean Freight:

  • 99% of intercontinental trade by volume
  • FCL (Full Container Load) vs. LCL (Less than Container Load)
  • Transit times: Trans-Pacific 14–21 days, Trans-Atlantic 7–14 days
  • Vulnerable to port congestion, blank sailings, and force majeure (Suez blockage, COVID disruptions)

Air Freight:

  • 4–5× faster than ocean but ~40–50× the cost per kg
  • Reserved for high-value/low-weight (electronics, pharma, fashion), perishables, or emergency replenishment

Parcel / Last-Mile:

  • FedEx, UPS, DHL, USPS, and regional carriers
  • E-commerce driver: Amazon has internalised last-mile (Amazon Logistics) to cut costs and gain control
